How weird is Darren Beattie?

Darren J. Beattie, the acting Under Secretary for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs in the U.S. Department of State, is a weirdo. But he’s not unique.

Beattie is one of many imitators of Tucker Carlson, whose contrarian brand demands ever-escalating enthusiasm for conspiracy theorists, foreign dictators, and bigoted “dissidents.” Like Carlson, Beattie has helped convince young populists that callous demagoguery is the antidote to progressive fixations on race and gender.

To paraphrase Johnny Cash: if Secretary of State Marco Rubio cannot (or will not) fire Darren Beattie, there’s a world of weirdos waiting in the wings.

CNN and other outlets have focused on Beattie’s well-documented racism. Semafor reported that both Carlson and Steve Bannon were thrilled by Beattie’s appointment to a senior — but, for now, temporary — State Department role.
